My name is Ahmad Dutton. I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and moved to Cape Town, South Africa at the age of 10. At school, I excelled in Mathematics, and after graduating in 2014, I decided that my talents would be best put to use in Computer Science. After all, we live in the 21st Century and a career in this field would certainly allow me to live comfortably. However, in the middle of my second year of studies at the University of Cape Town, I had a dramatic realization. I was only in the field because it was what the outside world expected of me. At this time, I was introduced to the Classics by Dr. Ian Dallas who gave me the opportunity to travel with him to France where I fell in love with the ancient world. I returned to Cape Town at the beginning of 2018 to further my study in Latin Language and Literature at university. I have now been studying the classics for more than 6 years, and as each day goes past I am more shocked that it is so neglected. The Classics and the Latin language are full of treasures, some laying on the surface while others are well hidden. I am a firm believer that they are absolutely essential for a complete education and offer profound insights into the human condition. I will be forever grateful to Dr. I9an Dallas for introducing me to this incredible world, without whom I would still be wandering this modern wasteland with little meaning. Moving forward, I hope to be able to increase his generosity by sharing with others what he has shared with me.
