MA Classics (UCL)
I’m a passionate Latinist. Unlike your average Classicist, I came to the Classics quite late (I actually started university with Computer Science). This puts me in the unique position of understanding why people may be reluctant towards learning the language, as well as knowing its benefits. Now, Latin has delivered to me gift after gift and it is my aim to help others find the hidden treasures which can be found in the learning of Latin.
A ‘full-mind’ Workout Routine
Regardless of the benefits of having a knowledge of Latin, the mere practice of learning Latin at any level is serious mental exercise. From the memorisation of a vast vocabulary and getting one’s head around the precise grammatical forms, to the attention to detail, problem solving, and mental flexibility required to translate, Learning Latin is a ‘full mind’ workout which should not be dismissed so easily. Even though learning Latin is not going to help you communicate on holiday, it will strengthen your mental capabilities and prepare you for the many mental challenges life has in store for you.
Command over your Language
Latin has a grammatical structure which makes it far more precise than most modern languages. English, for example, just does not compare. An English sentence can easily be translated into Latin in a variety of different ways with nuances that just do not exist in written English. The limits of our language are the limits of our world. Having a knowledge of Latin, gives you a better command of the English language by supplementing into it the precision and nuance inherent in Latin. Moving into the technological age of AI, being able to comprehend and communicate with such precision and nuance will be absolutely invaluable.
Increased Self-Awareness
All the thoughts in our head are understood using language. And since Latin is such a well-structured and precise language, it actually gives us a stronger understanding of this mental terrain in which we experience life. The more nuanced vocabulary learnt from Latin also gives the words we use to express ourselves and our ideas more meaning. We all know how easily thoughts can become confused and unclear, sometimes to the point that we barely know what we are trying to think ourselves.
Learning Latin can help us articulate are thoughts better, not only for others but for ourselves too, as well as become more conscious with our actions and words.
Knowledge about the Origins of Western Thought
Latin holds a position that no other language does, at least in western terms. It contains the foundations of our western thought. Our political and legal systems, as well as our philosophy are all borrowed from the Latin-speaking Romans. If we want to understand these systems with all their nuances, succeed within them, and change them for the better, learning Latin is massively helpful.
In the same way as a psychologist looks into the early childhood of a patient to discover hidden traumas to start healing, so we must look at the early childhood of our society to heal our own societal traumas
